Installation

Install the extension and the SDK.

Both downloads are on the Tightlip download page during the move to Hushbridge. Neither is in a store or on npm yet.

Where the files are

Go to tightlipai.com/download. When we checked it on 15 October 2026 it offered two files.

Files on the download page
FileVersionFor
tightlip-extension.zip0.1.1 (111 KB)Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Works with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity.
tightlip-0.1.0.tgz0.1.0 (388 KB)Node 18 or later. The engine, wrappers for OpenAI and Anthropic clients, and the check and proxy commands.

Browser extension 0.1.1

The extension installs by hand with Load unpacked. There is no Chrome Web Store listing yet. You can read the unpacked files before you load them.

  1. Download tightlip-extension.zip from the download page.
  2. Unzip it into a folder you will keep. The browser loads the extension from that folder, so do not delete it.
  3. Open chrome://extensions in Chrome, or edge://extensions in Edge, and turn on Developer mode.
  4. Click Load unpacked and select the folder.
  5. Pin the extension to the toolbar and reload any AI tabs that were already open.

The download page says your first 25 protected prompts work without a key. After that the extension needs an API key from your Tightlip account. A message with nothing to protect is not charged.

SDK tarball 0.1.0

The SDK is not published on the npm registry. Install it from the download link instead. It has no runtime dependencies and needs Node 18 or later.

Terminal, in your project folder
npm install https://tightlipai.com/downloads/tightlip-0.1.0.tgz

This adds one package called tightlip and a tightlip command in node_modules/.bin. Inside it, the engine is named @tightlip/core. That is an internal compatibility name during the transition from Tightlip to Hushbridge. Import from tightlip.

Check the install
npx --no-install tightlip --version
Output
0.1.0

Then try the check command on a text file. It runs on your machine, needs no key and spends no credits.

Terminal
npx --no-install tightlip check notes.txt
Output for a one-line notes.txt (Fictional example)
notes.txt: 1 item would be protected (profile: general)

  1:12 PERSON "Rosalind Achterberg"

By type: PERSON 1
Cost through the SDK or proxy: 1 credit. This check ran on your machine and sent nothing.

Troubleshooting

Common install problems
ProblemWhat to do
Running npx tightlip outside your projectThe download page warns against running npx tightlip on its own. The name is not registered on npm, so a bare npx tightlip could fetch someone else's package in future. Install the tarball first and use npx --no-install tightlip so npx never fetches anything.
The extension stops loadingThe folder you loaded may have been moved or deleted. Unzip again to a folder you keep and load it again.
Placeholders do not appear on an AI site that was already openReload the tab after loading the extension.
Node prints a syntax or import errorCheck node --version. The SDK needs Node 18 or later.
