Hushbridge vs Google Cloud Sensitive Data Protection

Google Cloud Sensitive Data Protection is a cloud API your engineers build on. Hushbridge protects prompts on your own device.

Who it is for

Google Cloud Sensitive Data Protection

Cloud API: developer building block

Google says it helps you discover, classify and de-identify sensitive data inside and outside Google Cloud. It includes the product formerly called Cloud Data Loss Prevention, and the API name is unchanged. Your app sends content to inspect, transform or reverse. It fits engineering teams on Google Cloud that process data at volume. This page covers the Google Cloud API. It does not cover the data protection rules for Gemini in Google Workspace.

Hushbridge

Local protection layer

Hushbridge works where people already use AI. On your device it swaps details for placeholders such as [PERSON_1] and shows you what the AI will get. After you review it, the placeholder version goes to the AI. Real values come back on your device. It fits professionals using ChatGPT or Claude for client work, and developers who want the swap and restore in their own process without a cloud call.

What it protectsAny text, images or stored data you send to it. Built-in infoType detectors find items such as names, card numbers and national IDs. You can add custom detectors.Names, identifiers, addresses, secrets and anything on your own "always protect" list, in text you type or paste.
Where processing happensOn Google Cloud. Your app sends content to the API.On your device.
Where original values are storedNo lookup table is needed for reversible methods. Deterministic or format-preserving encryption can be reversed with the original key. Google recommends keeping that key wrapped in Cloud KMS. Results from content methods are not stored in Google Cloud. In a swap table that stays on your device.
Restore in repliesPossible, if you build it. The reidentify method reverses encrypted values with the same key and settings. Hashing, masking and redaction cannot be reversed.Yes. Real values return on your device in supported replies.

Limits of each

Google Cloud Sensitive Data Protection

  • Content goes to Google Cloud for inspection.
  • Google says built-in infoType detectors are not a perfectly accurate detection method and recommends testing your settings.
  • There is no user-facing chat tool. Restore in AI answers is code you write.
  • Unstructured text needs a surrogate annotation before it can be re-identified.

Hushbridge

  • Detection can miss a name with no context cues. The rest of the text can still point to a person.
  • The extension does not scan attachments.
  • A chat site's page can read text while you type it.
  • It does not scan databases or cloud storage.
  • You still need to review the text before you send it.
