Hushbridge vs Microsoft Presidio

Presidio is a free library you host and wire up yourself. Hushbridge is a ready product that protects prompts on your device.

Who it is for

Presidio

Open-source library: build it yourself

Presidio started at Microsoft. Its repository now says it has completed a move to an independent, community-governed project under the Data Privacy Stack organization on GitHub. It stays open source under the MIT license, and the old Microsoft links redirect. You install it, host it and call it from your own code. It fits engineering teams that want full control and can maintain the integration.

Hushbridge

Local protection layer

Hushbridge works where people already use AI. On your device it swaps details for placeholders such as [PERSON_1] and shows you what the AI will get. After you review it, the placeholder version goes to the AI. Real values come back on your device. It fits people who want this working in ChatGPT or Claude today, and developers who want an SDK with restore built in.

QuestionPresidioHushbridge
What it protectsWhatever your code passes to it. It ships detectors for items such as credit card numbers and US Social Security numbers, plus name detection through an NLP model. You can add your own detectors.Names, identifiers, addresses, secrets and anything on your own "always protect" list, in text you type or paste.
Where processing happensWherever you run it: your own servers, containers or data pipelines. On your device.
Where original values are storedWherever your code keeps them. With the encrypt operator, the original comes back from the encrypted value and your key.In a swap table that stays on your device.
Restore in repliesPossible, if you build it. Its deanonymizers revert operations such as encryption. Wiring that into AI replies is your work.Yes. Real values return on your device in supported replies.
How you use itA Python library, or REST services in Docker. You call the analyzer, then the anonymizer, inside your own app.A browser extension for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, a web workspace, or the SDK and local proxy in your own code.
DeploymentSelf-hosted, from Python or PySpark through Docker to Kubernetes. Docker images now publish to the GitHub Container Registry.Extension version 0.1.1 installs manually in Chrome with "Load unpacked". Workspace and billing run on tightlipai.com during the move to the new name.
PricingFree. MIT license. You pay for your own hosting and engineering time.USD 0.05 per credit. Top-ups from USD 100. USD 20 free credit on sign-up (to be reconfirmed before launch). One credit covers each started block of 8,000 tokens.

Presidio facts come from its repository and docs. We did not benchmark it for this page.

Choose Presidio when

  • You want free, open code you can read, change and host.
  • You process data in your own pipelines, including PySpark jobs.
  • You need images or structured data handled as well as text.
  • You have engineers to own the setup, tuning and upkeep.

Choose Hushbridge when

  • You want protection in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini without a build project.
  • You want restore in AI answers ready to use, including streamed replies in the SDK.
  • You want to check the exact placeholder text before you send it.
  • You would rather pay per use than run and maintain your own service.

Limits of each

Presidio

  • Its README says it uses automated detection, so there is no guarantee it will find all sensitive information. It advises adding other protections.
  • It needs integration work before it protects any prompt.
  • Particula notes the default name detection is English-only. Other languages need extra models.
  • It is maintained by community volunteers, with no vendor support contract.

Hushbridge

  • Detection can miss a name with no context cues. The rest of the text can still point to a person.
  • The extension does not scan attachments.
  • A chat site's page can read text while you type it.
  • Its code is not open source.
  • You still need to review the text before you send it.
